K.L. Reeder
If you could text one of your characters and not have them leave you on read, who would it be and why?
Creeden. Because when he doesn’t answer, he’s usually doing something to get himself into trouble.
What is your absolute favorite genre to write about and why?
Urban Fantasy and Sci-fi. These are the genres I write and most interest me. I believe in magic and all I have to do is read about it to prove it exists. A great story is magic.
Do you have a favorite piece or work that you’ve written so far? Can you share?
Either my Spark book or my Kit book. Some of the scenes in them shock me. It’s hard to believe I wrote them. My spiritual learning has aided a great deal in the experiences I try to describe in them.
What do you do when faced with writer’s block?
I try to get my creative juices flowing through other means. I always undertake creative art projects with no expectations and just let myself play. I also write terribly until the writers block goes away and then edit it when my muse returns. Writing usually gets me through writer’s block, if that makes sense.
Why do you write?
Because not writing feels…wrong. It feeds my soul. It’s what I love doing.
When you set out to write, do you create a type of schedule to help you and keep you on track? What type?
I try to get to it first thing in the morning. Writing isn’t easy and it’s better to not put it off. Besides, nothing makes the rest of the day better than having added content—whether good or bad.
What has kept you inspired to continue writing?
My imagination and books. I want to see my name on the shelf. Also, people who read my work keeps me inspired. They seem to enjoy it and I like that. I like inspiring others.
Do you believe that in order for a writer to become a successful writer that it is worthwhile to write everyday or that it is okay to set their own standards?
Everyone writes differently, but I think the one thing successful writers have in common is that they show up regularly. Keeping a schedule isn’t easy until it is. It’s habit and it takes time to form a habit. I think going easy on yourself for the days you don’t up to your desk is important, too. We are only human. The trick is to show up the next day, no matter how scary it is.
Within the next 5 years, where do you see yourself within your writing journey?
I have made a promise to myself that this year is the year my books are sent into the world. I have three WIPs that are close to final drafts. In 5 years, I would like to have put these books behind me and started on new WIPs.
Do you have an inspirational author? Why are they your inspiration?
Hmm. Patricia Briggs. She writes amazing works, and J.K. Rowling (also a good writer) but because she is proof that with a little work, you can rise from the ashes.
Would you like to share something about yourself that no other reader knows about?
I used to write practice stories featuring myself when I was a kid. Story me always needed someone to save her. It was a mirror of what I felt inside. There isn’t a story me these days. I finally saved myself in the last one.
